A Researcher Claims Connors Was the Best All-Time Player

***
An American number-cruncher figures he's calculated a mathematical way to determine whose the best all-time in tennis. The surprising winner of that "honor" according to an Illinois researcher is old-time hero Jimmy Connors.
Current dominators Roger Federer (seventh) and Rafael Nadal (24th) stand well down the table, with only those two plus Andy Roddick (29th) the only current players in a list of golden oldies heavily biased in favor of Americans. Rod Laver, a Grand Slam winner twice in the 1960s didn't even get a look in, presumably since he played before the ATP established the rankings system.
Researcher Filippo Radicchi's ran statistics from 133,261 matches played since 1968 through an algorithm to come up with bad boy Connors as the best of the bunch.
Connors stood No. 1 for 160 consecutive weeks from 1974-77, won a record 109 titles including eight majors. The player from three decades ago is followed by Ivan Lendl and John McEnroe, with even Bjorn Borg only squeezing in on tenth.
Pete Sampras managed eighth in the math geek's quest to determine an historical pecking order. "We performed a complete analysis by determining the best players on specific surfaces as well as the best ones in each of the years covered by the data set," he told US media.
"Among all top players in the history of tennis, Jimmy Connors has been undoubtedly the one with the longest and most regular trend, being in the top 10 of the ATP year-end ranking for 16 consecutive years."
Top ten:
1. Jimmy Connors
2. Ivan Lendl
3. John McEnroe
4. Guillermo Vilas
5. Andre Agassi
6. Stefan Edberg
7. Roger Federer
8. Pete Sampras
9. Ilie Nastase
10. Bjorn Borg
